By Divyanshi Sharma: If you have been blocked by Elon Musk on Twitter, then there is some ‘good news’ for you. The billionaire decided to unblock everyone from his Twitter handle and encouraged others to follow suit as ‘negative feedback is a good thing’. Meanwhile, in another tweet, Musk replied to a user and agreed that accounts blocked by many users were previously shadowbanned on Twitter. However, the algorithm has now been fixed.
Elon Musk unblocks everyone from Twitter In a tweet, Musk wrote, “I unblocked everyone except scammers. I recommend others do the same. Negative feedback is a good thing.” For starters, shadowbanning means that a user’s content becomes invisible to his or her followers, without the user receiving any notification about the practice.
One user recently pointed out that publicly blocked or muted Twitter accounts had less visibility. Responding to the tweet, Musk explained that the ‘silly algorithm’ has now been fixed. He wrote, “This silly change of algorithm has been reverted. It reduced my account’s engagement by a factor of ten, as it was based on absolute number of blocks, not blocks as a percentage of followers.” This meant that any major account that posted anything “controversial” was sent to level 9 hell.
Elon Musk recently announced more layoffs on Twitter after promising no more layoffs in November last year. The layoffs mainly affect people in the sales and engineering departments.
According to a report in The Verge, the company had laid off employees from the sales and engineering departments a few days back. One of the fired employees was reporting directly to Musk and managing engineering for Twitter’s advertising business. This was the third round of layoffs since Musk promised that he would not fire more at the company.
The report also states that Musk asked employees to improve the way Twitter ads work and gave them a one-week deadline to do so. However, the reason behind the layoffs is unclear.
Earlier, Elon Musk apologized to people on Twitter for the platform’s ‘irrelevant and disturbing ads’. The billionaire further said that the company is taking necessary steps and will work like Google search to search keywords and topics in tweets.
They wrote, “Sorry for showing you so many irrelevant and annoying ads on Twitter! We are taking (apparent) corrective action to associate ads with keywords and topics in Tweets, just like Google does with search . It would dramatically improve contextual relevancy.”
