Judge James Boasberg, the Chief Judge of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, has recently been embroiled in controversies related to Trump administration cases, prompting Trump and his supporters to demand his removal.
Boasberg has challenged Trump administration policies multiple times, such as temporarily blocking the use of the 1798 Alien Enemies Act in March 2025 to deport alleged Venezuelan gang members, a decision upheld by the D.C. Circuit Court.
Trump labeled this judicial overreach, calling Boasberg a “Radical Left Lunatic” and demanding his impeachment.
Additionally, on March 27, 2025, Boasberg ordered the Trump administration to preserve Signal messages after a lawsuit by American Oversight claimed officials like Pete Hegseth and Marco Rubio used the app to discuss a military strike in Yemen, potentially violating the Federal Records Act.
Trump called this a conspiracy against the system, while his supporters view Boasberg, an Obama appointee, as a biased judge and push for impeachment, though no concrete steps have been taken yet.
On the other hand, Boasberg’s supporters argue his rulings are rooted in constitutional checks, with Chief Justice John Roberts backing judicial independence. Removing a federal judge like Boasberg requires impeachment by the House and conviction by the Senate, a complex process, and so far, this demand remains political rhetoric.
