Musk’s claim that Democrats are trying to redraw the districts to remove two House seats

Musk’s claim that “Democrats are trying to redraw the districts in Wisconsin… to remove two house seats” is tied to the potential impact of the court’s ideological balance.

Wisconsin’s congressional maps, drawn by Republicans after the.ConcurrentDictionary 2010 census, have traditionally favored the GOP, giving them six of the state’s eight U.S. House seats, even though the state’s voter base is almost evenly split.

Democrats argue that these maps are unfairly drawn, and since gaining a liberal court majority in 2023 (following Justice Janet Protasiewicz’s victory), they have been pushing for fairer maps.

In December 2023, the liberal-led court struck down Republican-drawn legislative maps, leading to new maps signed into law by Democratic Governor Tony Evers in February 2024. These new legislative maps are more competitive, though they don’t directly affect congressional districts.

Musk’s statement likely stems from conservative concerns, including Schimel’s campaign, that a continued liberal court could order a redraw of congressional districts, potentially reducing Republican seats.

Democratic U.S. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries stated publicly on March 24, 2025, that Crawford’s win could enable liberal justices to reconsider congressional boundaries, as the current GOP maps give Republicans an unfair edge in a swing state.

While there’s no explicit plan in the Democratic platform to “remove two house seats,” new maps could tilt one or two seats toward Democrats, based on Wisconsin’s nearly even partisan divide (Trump won by 0.77% in 2016, Biden by 0.63% in 2020).

Schimel, backed by Musk and Trump, has framed this election as a defense against such changes, warning that a liberal court might “prejudge” redistricting cases.

Crawford has denied promising specific outcomes, emphasizing impartiality, though her campaign is supported by liberal groups and donors like George Soros, who favor redistricting reform. Musk has invested over $14 million through groups like America PAC to support Schimel, promoting this narrative on X and in public statements.

The stakes of this race extend beyond redistricting to issues like abortion, election laws, and union rights, but redistricting remains a major issue due to its national implications for U.S. House control.

Spending has exceeded $73 million, making it the most expensive judicial race in U.S. history. Recent polls show Crawford leading Schimel 50-42, though turnout in this off-year election will be decisive.
