Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur and President Donald Trump’s appointed figurehead for eliminating government inefficiency, has reignited controversy with his latest directive targeting federal employees.
His demand that government workers justify their roles or risk termination has faced immediate resistance from federal agencies, legal experts, and labor unions. The unfolding conflict underscores the challenges of applying corporate-style efficiency mandates to the vast and complex U.S. federal workforce.
On February 22, 2025, Musk sent an email to all federal employees with a straightforward demand: provide a summary of their weekly accomplishments or face termination. The email read:
“Please reply to this email with approximately five bullet points outlining what you accomplished last week. CC your direct manager. Failure to comply will be interpreted as a voluntary resignation.”
The message, which aimed to assess employee productivity, caused immediate confusion across multiple government agencies.
The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) later announced that compliance with Musk’s email was not mandatory, advising employees to disregard it if they felt uncomfortable responding.
